TUCSON, Ariz. - Saving its best round for last, the Air Force golf team finished eighth at the 2009 Mountain West Conference Championship, being held at the par-71, 7,136-yard OMNI Tucson National Golf Club. The Falcons' score of 284 on Saturday was second-best among all teams for the day, as they finished the tournament at 875 (+23). Air Force's eighth-place finish is its best since TCU joined the league in the 2005-06 season.
Leading the way for the Falcons was junior Tom Whitney (La Quinta, Calif.), who turned in the team's top individual round of the weekend with a 2-under-par 69 on Saturday. Whitney finished the tournament tied for 20th place at 216 (+3). Next in the individual standings for Air Force were senior captain Shaun O'Bryant (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and freshman Robert Belz (San Antonio, Texas), who each carded a 70 in round three, to finish tied for 30th at 219.
Rounding out the group of competitors for the Falcons were sophomore Kyle Bailey (Austin, Texas), who tied for 37th place with a score of 223, and sophomore Aaron White (Hereford, Texas), who finished 44th at 232.
No. 17 TCU captured the team title in a playoff with No. 22 San Diego State, after both teams set the MWC Championship record for lowest 54-hole team score, each firing an 844 (-8) in regulation. It marks the Horned Frogs' first conference title since joining the league. Meanwhile, New Mexico's Steve Saunders captured medalist honors with a 9-under-par 204, setting MWC Championship records for lowest 54-hole individual score and largest margin of victory (four strokes).
At the conclusion of the championship, the MWC all-conference team was announced. Whitney was named to the 10-man team, becoming just the third Falcon to earn all-conference honors in the 10-year history of the league, and the first since Tyler Goulding in 2007.
