Air Force Finishes Eighth at PING Cougar Classic

    Provo, Utah - Led by sophomore Tom Whitney (La Quinta, Calif.), the Air Force golf team finished eighth at the PING Cougar Classic, hosted by BYU at the 7,001 yard, par-72 Riverside Country Club. The Falcons ended the tournament 9-over-par with a three-round total of 873.

    Despite firing a round of 77 on Saturday, Whitney finished one stroke under par for the tournament, turning in a total of 215 to tie for 14th place. Junior captain Shaun O'Bryant (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished four strokes behind, tying for 37th at 219. Freshman Kyle Bailey (Austin, Texas), whose final round score of 73 was the lowest for the Falcons on Saturday, tied for 45th place at 224.

    Meanwhile, junior Andrew Gibson (San Ramon, Calif.) and senior Bob Whitney (La Quinta, Calif.) finished at 224 and 225, respectively, for Air Force.

    New Mexico State captured the team championship, finishing at 847 (-17), while Boise State's Troy Merritt won medalist honors after finishing with a 6-under-par 208.

    Next up for Air Force is the 2008 Mountain West Conference Championship, being held April 24-26 in Tucson, Ariz.
