Falcons Conclude Competition at Barona Collegiate Cup
March 26, 2010 LAKESIDE, Calif. - Paced by another top-five showing from senior Tom Whitney (La Quinta, Calif.), the Air Force golf team finished 15th at the Barona Collegiate Cup, hosted by San Diego State at the par-72, 7,324-yard Barona Creek Golf Club. The Falcons, who turned in their best round on Friday, posted an overall score of 1156 (+76) for the tournament, as five of six golfers contributed to the team score in each round. Whitney saved his best round of the tournament for Friday, firing a 2-under-par 70 to finish tied for fifth place at 214 (-2). The senior has now recorded eight top-10 showings in 10 tournaments this season, including six finishes in the top five. This week’s tournament also marks the eighth time this season that Whitney has finished at or below par. Freshman Andrew Hoops (Highland, Calif.) finished next in the standings for the Falcons, tying for 77th place at 233, while sophomore Travis Deckert (Wichita, Kan.) turned in his best round of the tournament on Friday to tie for 81st place overall with a score of 236. Sophomore Robert Belz (San Antonio, Texas) ended the tournament tied for 91st place at 239, followed by Kyle Bailey (Jr., Austin, Texas) and Caleb Leestma (So., Seabrook, Texas), who placed tied for 94th place and 97th place, respectively. Host San Diego State used a dominating performance to capture the team title, turning in a three-round total of 1072 (-8), 22 strokes ahead of second-place UC Irvine. Meanwhile, UC Irvine’s John Chin earned medalist honors, finishing with a 12-under-par 204 for the tournament. The Air Force golf team returns to action April 5-6 when it heads to Scottsdale, Ariz., for the annual Cowboy Classic, hosted by MWC rival Wyoming.
