Air Force Wraps Up First Day at Barona Collegiate Cup

LAKESIDE, Calif. - Following two rounds of action, the Air Force golf team sits in 15th place at the Barona Collegiate Cup, hosted by San Diego State at the par-72, 7,324-yard Barona Creek Golf Club. With five of six golfers contributing to the team score in each round, the Falcons turned in a two-round total of 778 (+58) on Thursday. Leading the way for Air Force on the first day of competition is senior Tom Whitney (La Quinta, Calif.), who is currently tied for eighth place. After firing a 71 in the first round, Whitney ended the day at an even-par 144. Next in the individual standings for the Falcons is freshman Andrew Hoops (Highland, Calif.), in a tie for 80th place at 157, while Caleb Leestma (So., Seabrook, Texas) sits a stroke behind in a tie for 83rd place. Sophomores Robert Belz (San Antonio, Texas) and Travis Deckert (Wichita, Kan.) are tied for 88th place at 160, while junior Kyle Bailey (Austin, Texas) rounds out the group with a two-round score of 164. Host San Diego State sits atop the team leaderboard with a two-round total of 712 (-8). Meanwhile, UC Irvine’s John Chin fired an 8-under-par 136 to take the lead in the individual standings. The final round of the Barona Collegiate Cup is slated to begin tomorrow with a 7:30 a.m. (PT) shotgun start.
