Tom Whitney Wins Medalist Honors at Argonaut Invitational

    PENSACOLA, Fla. - Paced by medalist Tom Whitney (Jr., La Quinta, Calif.), the Air Force golf team took fifth place at the Argonaut Invitational, hosted by West Florida at the par-72, 6,815-yard Pensacola Country Club. The Falcons finished the tournament with a three-round score of 889 (+25).

    Whitney fired a three-round score of 207 (-9), to finish in first place, four strokes ahead of his closest competitor. It matched his lowest tournament score of the season, and is tied for third-lowest in Academy. It also marks the second first-place showing of Whitney's career, as he last earned medalist honors at the 2006 Service Academy Golf Classic.

    Next in the individual standings for the Falcons was senior Shaun O'Bryant (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who finished tied for 21st at 224 (+8). Freshman Robert Belz (San Antonio, Texas) ended the tournament tied for 39th place at 230, while Kyle Bailey (So., Austin, Texas) tied for 47th overall with a three-round score of 233.

    Rounding out the group of competitors for Air Force were Andrew Gibson (Sr., San Ramon, Calif.) and Caleb Leestma (Fr., Seabrook, Texas), competing as an individual, who tied for 63rd place at 240.

    The Falcons are back in action March 19-21 at the Ron Moore Invitational, hosted by Denver in Goodyear, Ariz.
