Hedrick Wins National Strength Coach Award

    July 31, 2003

The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) recently presented Air Force's Allen Hedrick with the 2003 Strength and Conditioning College Professional of the Year Award.

Allen Hedrick is the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He has lectured at 23 conferences and clinics since 1993, and has provided hands-on training for such athletic programs as U.S. men's national field hockey, Greco-roman wrestling, football, U.S. speed skating, and U.S. national all-around speed skating.

He has demonstrated exceptional strength training and conditioning skills as well as the ability to inspire and teach others. Hedrick has been a member of the NSCA for 17 years and has contributed to the Association by writing articles for the Strength and Conditioning Journal and presenting at numerous conferences and clinics.

"It almost seems ironic to receive an award for being involved in a profession that I enjoy so much being a part of. Working at the Air Force Academy is such a tremendous opportunity--working with great people in a world-class facility. I try to remember daily to thank God for putting me in this situation," said Hedrick after receiving the award.

This prestigious honor recognizes the efforts and dedication of college strength coaches. The NSCA Strength and Conditioning College Professional of the Year Award is currently in its 23rd year, and is proudly sponsored by Power Systems Inc. The list of previous recipients, such as Boyd Epley, Thomas Baechle, Bruno Pauletto, and Dan Wathen, reflect the magnitude of this celebrated accomplishment.

Each year, six college coaches are nominated by a committee of their peers to be considered for this esteemed award. The other nominees for this award were: Dan Dalrymple of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio; Michael Doscher of Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Georgia; Robert Dos Remedios of the College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, California; Larry Levermann of Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas; and Joe Owens of the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio.

The award recipient is then chosen by a vote of the NSCA College Strength and Conditioning Professionals Special Interest Group members. Hedrick was announced as the winner during the 26th Annual NSCA National Conference.
