Air Force Football Second Nationally In APR
May 14, 2009
The Air Force Academy football team is ranked second nationally among 120 division I football schools with an Academic Progress Report (APR) of 983, as released by the NCAA recently. Air Force's mark is just one point behind national leader Stanford, who had a 984. Duke and Rutgers tied for third with a 980 while Rice was fifth with a 979. The Falcons are the only team among the top five nationally to win eight or more regular season games and qualify for a post-season bowl game the last two years. "Student-athletes at the United States Air Force Academy must complete over 140 semester hours of the nation's most demanding curriculum. The NCAA's recent release of APRs for the 120 Football Bowl Subdivision playing institutions is another remarkable achievement by our cadets," Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun said. "It's also a sign of the incredible dedication of the Air Force Academy's faculty to provide our cadets with the nation's best access and instruction. Academy staff members coupled with the quality of the cadets contribute to an environment that makes the United States Air Force Academy the world's finest leadership and educational institution." The Mountain West Conference ranked fifth overall among the 12 conference nationally with a 6.222 average. TCU ranked second behind Air Force within the conference with a 962 mark, which ranked 22nd nationally. Utah was third at 954 which ranked 31st nationally. The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester or quarter by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention, and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
High-performing teams receiving public recognition awards this year posted APR scores ranging from 976 to a perfect 1,000. Multi-year APR scores for all Division I sports teams are based on scores from the 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08 academic years.
