Ryan Coates Named Boxer Of The Week
Nov. 24, 2003 USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force senior Ryan Coates was named the Academy's Boxer Of The Week, following a round of Friday Night Fights on Friday, Nov. 21, in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gymnasium. Coates earned the decision in the 193-pound division over junior Sean Mitchell. "Coates landed hard combinations to the body and head; never allowing Mitchell to get his offense going," Air Force head boxing coach Eddie Weichers said. "Coates was the aggressor from the opening bell and pinned Mitchell on the ropes every round. He used a hard jab and a straight right to win the decision." Also claiming victories during the Friday night bout were Geoff Woolf (145-lbs.), Chris Collins (195-lbs.), Oscar Casillas (200-lbs.), Matt Boyd (178-lbs.), William Boyles (hywt.), Colin Lafavor (180-lbs.), Dustin Mayne (185-lbs.), Trevor Cook (165-lbs.) and Troy Mangum (167-lbs.). Anthony Patino and Mike Sackenheim each earned a victory in the 170-pound division, while James Gilchrist and Austin Street earned decisions in the 156-pound division. Augustine Kamden and Jeremy Gideon each earned wins in the 175-pound class. Air Force hosts the next round of Friday Night Fights on Friday, Dec. 5, at 4:30 p.m., in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym. Seniors Clell Knight (165-pounds), Leif Nordhagen (175-pounds) and Ethan Sabin (195-pounds) will travel to Manhattan tonight (Nov. 24) to take on other boxers from the National Collegiate Boxing Association. Action is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m., at the New York Athletic Club. Complete results from Friday night's action:
