Brian Navin Earns Boxer of the Week Honors
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- Another 12 hard-hitting bouts highlighted Friday Night Fights for the Air Force boxing team on Nov. 18 at the Academy. The night featured nine decisions and three contests that ended early in the third round.
Sophomore Brian Navin picked up Boxer of the Week honors after a referee-stopped victory at 139 pounds over James Baker. It was a rematch for the two boxers, who also faced off in the finals of last year's Wing Open Tournament and both athletes held nothing back.
"It was fireworks from the very beginning," head coach Eddie Weichers said following the contest. "I'm not sure that we've seen the best or the last of these two warriors."
Both boxers landed several telling blows, but it was Navin's jab that scored points and set up a powerful right and allowed Navin to earn another win over Baker.
In other action from the ring, JJ Homan picked up a 140-pound decision from Nicholas Goc. Colin LaFavor and Bruce Jamison both earned decisions at 185 pounds, with their decisions coming over Chris Johnson and Dustin Mayne, respectively.
At 154 pounds, Daryn Nelson earned a decision over Marcos Gonzales, while Austin Almond decisioned Richard Davis at 160 pounds. Mike Bosack picked up a decision from Jon Andresen at 160 pounds.
Rudy Bowen decisioned Sean May at 155 pounds, while Travis Miller earned his decision at 135 pounds over Harvey White. Benjamin Golata picked up a 186-pound decision from Elon Bromfield. In addition to Navin's referee-stopped-contest, Jeff Aiello and Shaun Cuevas also earned early victories. Both Aiello's 200-pound win over Eric Garcia and Cuevas' 145-pound victory over Regan Dela-Cruz were contests stopped in the third.
"The improvement from last week was obvious across the board," Weichers continued. "Our defense was much improved and the body shots came hard and often."
Several members of the Falcon program will travel to New York, N.Y., on Monday, Nov. 21, to face nine other National Collegiate Boxing Association schools at the prestigious New York City Athletic Club Invitational. Action is slated to begin at 7 p.m. (EST). The next round of Friday Night Fights is scheduled for Dec. 2, at 4:30 p.m., in the Cadet Gym Upper Boxing Room.
