Boxers Split Bouts At UNLV

Smith Earns Boxer Of The Week Honors

Air Force broke even at the UNLV Invitational as the Falcons won four of their eight bouts Saturday, November 2 at the Palms Casino and Resort.

The best bout of the night for Air Force was in the 121-pound division with sophomore Darren Smith earning a hard-fought decision over UNLV's Xennon Miller.

"Darren lost the first round to Miller," said head coach Eddie Weichers. "But he came out strong in the last two rounds as he kept moving forward and put forth an aggressive boxing attack to win the final two rounds."

Smith's winning effort earned him Boxer of The Week honors.

The Invitational featured boxers from Nevada-Reno, University of Cal-Berkeley, Arizona State, San Jose State and Penn State.

Other winning efforts came from Nick Haussler (180-pounds) over Arizona's Lars Havens; Marcos Gonzales (147-pounds) over Nevada's Mike Tonsell and Brock Predovich (210-pounds) over UNLV's Nelson Osemwengie. Gonzales, a freshman won his bout by having the referee stop the contest in the second round.

Kim Moon (120-pounds) of UNLV stopped the Falcons' Roy Cho, a freshman, in the third round while in the heavyweight division; Penn State's Luke Runion stopped Randy Gibbs in the second round. In a 133-pound bout, UNLV's Lyle Nixon earned a decision over junior Geoff Woolf and senior Joey Plank lost his 158-pound bout.
