Haussler Named Air Force Boxer of the Week
Oct. 27, 2003
DETROIT, Mich. - The Air Force boxing team picked up a pair of victories in six bouts against Army and Navy on Friday, Oct. 24, as the three service academies met at the Detroit Athletic Club in Detroit, Mich. Junior Mike Sackenheim and senior Nick Haussler earned the victories for Air Force in the 175-pound and 188-pound divisions, respectively.
After winning the 188-pound title in a decision over Navy's David Rainey, Haussler was named the academy's Boxer of the Week.
"Nick used a great jab to stick and move against the aggressive Rainey," AFA head boxing coach Eddie Weichers said. "He fought the match in the center of the ring and used his hand and foot speed to his advantage."
Sackenheim used what Weichers calls 'punches in bunches' to defeat Army's Ryan Boeka.
"Mike won an impressive decision with an excellent boxing display," Weichers continued. "Good defense, good movement and great combos. It's a hard recipe to beat."
In the other boxing news for Air Force, Roy Cho and Luis Pena dropped matches to boxers from Navy, while Blake Baldi and Chad Everson fell to opponents from Army.
This weekend, several Air Force boxers will travel to Las Vegas, Nev., to take on competitors from the other NCBA schools on Friday, Oct. 31. The marquee match-up will be in the 165-pound division when defending national champion Clell Knight of Air Force takes on Navy's Josh Sandborn.
The Falcons return home next weekend to host Army on Nov. 7. The match will take place at 4:30 p.m., in the Cadet Gym's Upper Boxing Room.
Complete results from Friday's match are as follows:
