Oct. 21, 2008
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - For their first road trip of the season, six members of the Air Force boxing team will travel to Detroit, Mich., to compete in the annual Service Academy Classic on Friday, Oct. 24. The contest, which will be held at the historic Detroit Athletic Club, features six boxers from each of the three major service academies.
Air Force opens the event with a pair of bouts. Senior Harvey White opens the night in a 125-pound bout against Navy's Jesus Aguilera and will be followed by classmate Dave Simon's 132-pound bout against Paul Hollwedel of Navy. It is the second time this year that an Air Force boxer has competed against Hollwedel, as Dean Chuva earned a decision victory in the Air Force/Navy dual on Oct. 3.
Following a 145-pound bout between Army's Terrell Anthony and Navy's Antone Aku, junior Alexander Shin will take on Army's Dan Hogan in a 140-pound match. Army and Navy battle once again, as Nicholas Antonio toes the line with Chris Bertucci at 160 pounds.
Falcons are featured in three of the final four bouts. Senior Sean May will face off with Navy's Jorge Hernandez in a 158-pound bout, while classmate Austin Almand takes on Army's Stephane Manuel in a 165-pound contest. Junior Bailey Ball will step into the ring with Army's Johnnie Garcia at 149 pounds, while Army's Jody Champman and Navy's Rick Weigert close out the evening with a 190-pound showdown.
It is the first match of the season for three of the Falcons' six contenders. Ball (0-1), Simon (1-0) and White (1-0) have already seen action this year, with Ball having faced a Navy foe in the annual dual meet.
Action for the Service Academy Classic is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. (EST).
