USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- The Air Force boxing team kicked off Friday Night Fights with 13 exciting contests in the Upper Boxing Room on Oct. 14. Team captain Luis Pena picked up Boxer of the Week honors after earning a decision over Chris Culver in a 169-pound contest.

Looking strong, Pena used a good body attack and had power in both hands. Using relentless body shots, Pena steadily wore down his classmate en route to the decision.

In other action from the ring, Joe Conrad earned a decision over Bruce Jamison in the 173-pound contest, while Brian Navin picked up a win over Jeremy Homan at 140 pounds. Oscar Casillas took a decision from Colin LaFavor at 195 pounds, while Alex LaBaron earned the win from Eric Garcia in the night's other 195-pound match-up.

Jahmil Edwards and Rudy Bowen both earned decisions in bouts at the 156-pound weight class. Edwards defeated squad-mate Ike Akagha, while Bowen claimed his first win from Sam Gay. Gary Cook claimed a decision over Dean Chuva at 117-pounds, while Jeff Sheehan earned his over Austin Almond in a 165-pound match.

Matt Jensen decisioned Adam Sauter at 188 pounds and Jon Anderson picked up a win from Zach Zigler in the 183-pound contest. Nicholas Goc, who made his collegiate debut last weekend at Navy, earned a victory over Juan Pino, when the referee stopped their 145-pound matchup in the third round. Travis Miller picked up the quick victory at 139 pounds when his contest with Steven Bennett was stopped in the first round.

"It was our first Friday match of the season and the first exposure to the two-minute rounds for a lot of the boxers," head coach Eddie Weichers stated. "They displayed a lot of heart and desire tonight. Several newcomers made immediate statements as they worked themselves onto the Champions Board."

The Falcons are off until Friday, Oct. 28, when members of the team travel to Detroit, Mich., for the annual showdown of the service academies at the Detroit Athletic Club. Air Force will take on Army and Navy at 7 p.m. (EST). The next home action for the Falcons will be on Friday, Nov. 4, when Army comes to the Upper Boxing Room at 4:30 p.m. (MST).
