Boxing Hosts Navy on Friday to Open Season
Sept. 28, 2004 USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force boxing team will open the 2004-05 season hosting service academy rival Navy on Friday, Oct. 1. The Falcons' showdown with the Midshipmen will begin at 6 p.m., in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gymnasium. The contest will feature 10 bouts, ranging from the 125-pound weight division to the heavyweight division. The match with Navy begins an exciting 2004-05 season that was recently announced by head coach Eddie Weichers. The schedule features five road contests and six home bouts during the regular season. Air Force will face the Mids on one more occasion this month, when they travel to Detroit, Mich., on Oct. 29 to take on Army and Navy. The Falcons and Black Knights will also meet again the next week (Nov. 5) at West Point. The month of November sees the Falcons travel to Lousiville, Ky., for a match with Kentucky, before traveling to New York for a competition with other National Collegiate Boxing Association schools. The Falcons will face off with the NCBA schools on two more occasions - Jan. 29 in Seattle, Wash., and Feb. 4 in Reno, Nev. The Falcons will compete in five "Friday Night Fights" at the Cadet Gym, beginning Oct. 22. The intra-wing bouts will lead up to the annual Wing Open Championships. The preliminaries (Feb. 10), quarterfinals (Feb. 17) and semifinals (Feb. 23) will all be held in the Cadet Gym. The victors of each weight division will advance to the 2005 Wing Open Championships, which will be held in the Clune Arena on Sunday, March 6. The 12 champions of the Wing Open will make up the Air Force team that will travel to the NCBA West Regional championships on Mar. 17-19 in Reno, Nev., and the NCBA Championships on Mar. 31-Apr. 2 at site still to be determined. The Falcons have claimed 18 of 25 national championships, including the last six. The Falcons have produced 90 individual national championships and 237 All-Americans.
