Ian Tuznik Advances to Semifinal Round of NCBA Action

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- The intense quarterfinal action of the National Collegiate Boxing Association Championships continued tonight (March 31) at the Academy with 17 bouts featuring contenders ranging from 147-pounds to the heavyweight divisions. Sophomore Ian Tuznik (Niceville, Fla.) won his heavyweight bout to advance to the semifinals.

Senior Adam Vance (Leawood, Kan.) dropped a 156-pound decision to Navy's Alejandro Loya, despite a hard third round. Classmate Mike Sackenheim (Hamilton, Ohio) fell in the 165-pound quarterfinals, as the referee stopped his contest with Navy's Josh Sanborn in the third round.

Air Force picked up its first win of the session in the night's final heavyweight bout, as Tuznik earned a split decision victory over Kentucky's Kamaal Ahmad. Both boxers battled throughout the six-minute contest, with Tuznik just edging out his opponent.

In other quarterfinal action, defending national champion Todd Gaylord advanced to the semifinals in the only 147-pound contest contested during the evening session.

Army's Matt Pride, Iowa State's Ryan Allen and UNLV's Jeff Watkins advanced by decision at 156-pounds, while the 165-pound weight class featured three of the four bouts ending by the referee stopping the contest. In addition to Sanborn, Dan Osbourne of VMI and defending national champion Ryan Healy of Nevada both won shortened bouts. Also at 165-pounds, Greg Murrell of UNLV advanced by decision.

At 175-pounds, Lock Haven's Ryan Falgowski advanced to tomorrow night's competition, as did Army's Ovidiu Iacob, who sent his opponent into the ropes and caused the referee to stop the contest early. Dan Voors from Miami (Ohio) also advanced following an early stop to his contest at 185-pounds, as did Navy's Chris Lonero.

Henry Namauu of UNLV earned a decision at 195-pounds to advance to the semifinals, as did Navy's Greg Watten, last year's champ at 185-pounds. Defending heavyweight champion Wes Baer of Army advanced to the semifinals by knockout.

This hard-hitting competition continues tomorrow (April 1) with NCBA semifinal action. Action for the 24-bout semifinal round is slated to begin at 6:00 p.m., at Clune Arena in the Cadet Field House.
