Competition Gets Underway with NCBA Quarterfinals
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- The National Collegiate Boxing Association got underway this afternoon (March 31) with 11 hard-fought quarterfinal bouts, in which the Falcons picked up three first-round victories.
Air Force's first competitor of the day, sophomore Ezekiel Ignaco (Waukegan, Ill.) dropped a decision to Navy's Jeremy Biggs in a 125-pound contest. Freshman Brian Navin (Boston, Mass.) got the Falcons on the right track, advancing to the 132-pound semifinals following a win over Army's Pat Lynch.
Junior Luis Pena (Laredo, Texas) and senior Blake Baldi (Peoria, Ill.) also advanced in their respective brackets. Pena took a decision from Billy Spalding of Kentucky at 139-pounds, while Baldi presented a dominating presence over Lock Haven's Jayson Sanchez at 147-pounds.
In other action, Dan Asis of Army and Josh Wisniewski of Lock Haven advanced in the 125-pound weight class, while Lock Haven's Josh Mercado, Navy's Adrian Evangelista and UNLV's Daniel Reese all moved forward at 139-pounds. Navy's BJ Richardson and Nevada's Thomas Gennaro qualified for the semifinals in the 147-pound division.
The heavier weight classes will have their quarterfinals tonight at Clune Arena, beginning at 7 p.m. Tonight's match-ups will feature Air Force standouts Adam Vance (Leawood, Kan.), Mike Sackenheim (Hamilton, Ohio) and Ian Tuznik (Niceville, Fla.). The rest of the Falcons have byes in the quarterfinals.
