Six Academy Boxers Defend Wing Open Titles
March 7, 2004
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The 2004 Wing Open Championships lived up to the hype. The ten bouts that took place on Sunday, March 7, at the Cadet Field House were all hard fought contests, as all five defending champions from last year regained their titles, while five contenders who finished second last year earned their first Wing Open championship.
In the first match of the night, Ezekiel Ignaco earned a unanimous decision over Jeb Fredrickson in the 125-pound weight class. In the 132-pound bout, defending Wing Open champion Geoff Woolf kept Josh Park against the ropes and claimed the victory after the referee called the contest in the third round.
A runner-up one year ago, Luis Pena earned a 4-1 split decision over Blake Baldi in the 139-pound bout. The 147-pound match featured two cadets who earned runner-up honors last year. Ryan Dorsey-Spitz, who is competing in this weight class for the first time this season, defeated Marcos Gonzales by a 5-0 vote.
Defending national champion and 2003 Wing Open champion Clell Knight earned the 4-1 decision over Troy Mangum at 156-pounds, while defending Wing Open champion Leif Nordhagen earned a split 3-2 decision over Mike Sackenheim at 165-pounds.
A runner-up in the 175-pound weight class one year ago, Augustin Kamdem earned a 4-1 split decision over James Mitchell. Ryan Coates successfully defended his Wing Open title at 175-pounds, earning a unanimous decision over Chris Collins.
Freshman Willie Lloyd and junior Darren Smith were unopposed in their respective divisions. Lloyd will advance in the 112-pound weight division, while Smith retains his Wing Open title at 119-pounds.
Knight was named the recipient of the 2004 Clune Boxing Award, which has been awarded to the most outstanding boxer of the Wing Open since 1979 and is named in honor of former Air Force Academy Athletic Director Col. John J. Clune.
The Wing Open champions will travel to Berkeley, Calif., to compete at the West Regional competition of the National Collegiate Boxing Association on March 18-20.
