Wing Open Broadcast Dates Announced
March 6, 2008
DENVER, Colo. - The MountainWest Sports Network - The Mtn. - will air a two-hour original program featuring the 2008 Air Force Wing Open Boxing Championships held at Clune Arena on the campus of the United States Air Force Academy on March 2. Highlighted by 10 bouts, the event marked the Golden Anniversary of Air Force boxing. The Wing Open began in 1958 with four bouts, and has grown to be one of the most anticipated events on the Academy calendar. The winners of the Wing Open will move on to represent the Air Force Academy at the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) regional and national competitions. The Falcons have won 18 of 28 national titles and produced 98 national champions. "The uniqueness of the Wing Open by itself creates compelling programming that we are excited to be able to provide to our viewers," said Kim Carver, vice president and general manager of The Mtn. "As I have said before, we are committed to bringing the best of MWC Olympic sports programming forward, and we thank the staff and student athletes at the Air Force Academy for their assistance in doing so." The atmosphere inside Clune Arena is nearly as entertaining as the projected bouts. Cadets usher the spectators to their seats, while the Cadet Drum and Bugle Corps entertains the crowd. In addition to the entertainment aspects of the Wing Open, the Falcons have dubbed the event "Fighting for a Cause". Since 1984, the Air Force boxing team and the Wing Open have donated more than $220,000 to worthwhile causes and families in need throughout the Colorado Springs area. The 2008 card features five past champions and five previous finalists, which includes an impressive total of three freshmen and the first pair of brothers (Michael Dunn - 147; James Dunn - 156) to reach the championship round in the 32-year tenure of head coach Eddie Weichers. The Mtn.'s two-hour production of the 2008 Air Force Wing Open Boxing Championship will be aired nationally by CBS College Sports Network (CSTV) on Tuesday, March 11 at 8:00pm ET. Six members of the Comcast SportsNet (CSN) family will also re-air the Wing Open on a regional basis:
