Hostetler Earns Boxing Honor; Makes Wing Open Finals
Feb. 21, 2002
Jacob Hostetler was one victory short of making it to the 2001 Wing Open Boxing Championships. Now he is just one fight short of being crowned a Wing Open champion.
Fighting in the 147-pound weight class Wednesday night in a semifinal bout, Hostetler, a junior, won a hard-fought decision over junior Frankie Woods. Last year, Hostetler lost his semifinal bout and watched Woods compete in the Open finals.
"Jacob used good boxing skills to outpoint the more aggressive Woods," said assistant boxing coach Capt. Mark Clifford. "Woods appeared a little rusty because he was coming off a hand injury that kept him from sparring until two weeks ago."
The tough decision earned Hostetler Boxer of the Week honors. He joins 23 boxers who will fight for titles in the Wing Open Championships set for Saturday, March 2, in Clune Areana beginning at 2 p.m.
Among the 23 boxers, five our defending champions. They are Ulysses Linares (147-pounds), Clell Knight (156-pounds), Doug Spear (112-pounds), Joe Harding (165-pounds) and Dustin Brown (195-pounds). Darren Smith takes the 119-pound title as he is unopposed in his weight division.
Knight will face either Tommie Cisar or Scott Hernandez in his weight class. Their bout was postponed until Friday due to an illness.
Here are the semifinal results:
