USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The 2009 Wing Open Boxing Tournament officially begins for the Air Force boxing team on Wednesday, Feb. 18, with five quarterfinal bouts. Action begins at 4:30 p.m., in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym. Spots in the semifinal round are up for grabs in four different weight classes.
Freshman Daniel Starr and sophomore Trever Smyalla open the afternoon at 139 pounds. The winner will go on to face junior Bailey Ball in the semifinal round. Senior Rudy Bowen will face off against sophomore Ryan Wilkinson in a 156-pound matchup, with a semifinal spot against sophomore Joe Silvio on the line.
The next two bouts will feature 165-pound boxers at opposite ends of the bracket. Sophomore Dalton Hall and freshman Casey Habluetzel will step into the ring for the chance to face senior Austin Almand in next week's semifinals, while freshmen Nick Cataldo and Luke Dugger will face off for the right to advance to a semifinal bout with senior Justin Lee.
The final bout of the night features seniors Jon Andresen and Thomas Meyer in a 175-pound bout. The winner will face defending Wing Open champion, Lucas Gagliardi, next week in the semifinal round.
The five winners will advance to the semifinal round of action next Wednesday (Feb. 25).
