Augustin Kamdem Named Boxer of the Week
Jan. 20, 2004 USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - After a month-long competitive break, the Air Force boxing team returned to action on Friday, Jan. 16, hosting the first Friday Night Fights of 2004. There were 16 bouts on the card in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gymnasium. Following a victory in the 180-pound weight class, junior Augustin Kamdem (Yaounde', Cameroon) was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week. Kamdem defeated freshman Andrew Quijano. Kamdem scored two standing eight-counts in the second round, before the referee halted the contest. "Kamdem came out fast against Quijano," Air Force head boxing coach Eddie Weichers stated after the match. "Quijano landed some strong shots, but Kamdem was very determined. He scored with some left and rights, keeping the pressure on. Kamdem's speed was the difference in that match." Also earning a win during the bouts on Friday night were Jeb Fredrickson (134-lbs.), Marcos Gonzales (147-lbs.), Geoff Woolf (140-lbs.), Trevor Cook (165-lbs.), Chris Collins (193-lbs.), Mike Sackenheim (167-lbs.), Adam Vance (162-lbs.), Brandon Galindo (174-lbs.), Jose Garcia (156-lbs.), Ian Tuznik (hywt.) and Joe Conrad (173-lbs.). In addition, James Mitchell and Evin Negron both won bouts in the 175-pound weight class, while Christopher Crouch and Ryan Coates earned decisions in the 200-pound weight class. The Falcons continue competition this weekend, when seven Air Force boxers travel to Seattle, Wash., on Saturday, Jan. 24. The Falcons will compete against six NCBA schools, including Army and Navy at the Washington Athletic Center. The boxing team will make history on Wednesday, Jan. 28, when they host the first-ever Wednesday Night Fights at 4:30 p.m., in the Upper Boxing Room at the Cadet Gym.
