Falcons Close Out Fall Semester with Friday Night Fights

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force boxing team closed out the fall semester with another stellar round of Friday Night Fights on Dec. 7, in the Upper Boxing Room of the Academy's Cadet Gym. In all, 22 boxers stepped into the ring for one last time prior to finals and the upcoming holiday break. Junior Boyce Loomis was named Boxer of the Week for the second time in three contests.
"The veterans and newcomers both brought their "A" games tonight," the coaching staff of Eddie Weichers and Capt Erwin Vargas said. "Everyone showed determination and will to win."
Boxing up from his normal weight class, Loomis faced Cory Tintzman in a 210-pound contest. Throughout the hard-fought, three-round match, both boxer landed heavy hits. Using good combinations and hand speed, Loomis was able to keep his powerful opponent at bay to earn the judges' decision.
In fact, all of the bouts came down to the judges' decision.
Sophomore Bailey Ball took a 147-pound decision from classmate Seth Gunn, while fellow sophomore Alexander Shin defeated junior Harvey White at 135 pounds. The next two bouts featured classmates in the ring. Senior Daryn Nelson claimed a victory over Clifford Moore at 165 pounds, while junior Nathan Liptak decisioned Sean May in a 155-pound bout.
The next two bouts featured victories for Cadet Squadron 24. Junior Dean Chuva defeated freshman Matt Demars at 119 pounds, while senior Ryan Price earn a victory over classmate James Dunn in the 170-pound bout. Freshman Gabe Valdeleon picked up his first collegiate win, taking a 136-pound decision from junior David Simon.
Valdeleon's victory started a trend, as freshmen claimed the final three decisions. Nick Holland won his 156-pound bout over sophomore Mike Dunn, while Will Remington defeated classmate Ricky Rodriguez in the 171-pound weight class. William Lindberg closed out the night with a 196-pound win over senior Bradford Wade.
Following the holiday hiatus, the Falcons return to action on Jan. 11 with another round of Friday Night Fights.
