Red Corner Boxers Dominate Friday Fights
Dec. 8, 2006
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - In a night dominated by contenders from the red corner, the Air Force boxing team closed out the first half of the season with another tough round of Friday Night Fights on Dec. 8 at the Academy. All but two of the night's 15 winners came from the red corner, headlined by senior Boxer of the Week Joe Conrad.
"It was another great night," the Falcons' coaching staff said. "There were a lot of veteran fighters that showed their experience and determination by winning hard victories with good ring generalship and crisp, sharp punches. Many of the boxers showed that they had been putting time in the gym by winning close bouts in the third round."
Throughout the 173-pound bout against classmate Mark Ruther, Conrad used hard body shots to set up his combinations. Conrad's left hook to the body sent Ruther to the mat. That shot eventually led to Conrad's victory, as the referee stopped their contest in the third round.
Freshman Alex Shin got the night going, taking a 147-pound decision from sophomore Daniel Montilla. Senior Chris Johnson defeated classmate Dustin Mayne at 190 pounds, fellow senior Colin LaFavor decisioned sophomore Andrew Catoire at 188 pounds.
Senior Ezekiel Ignaco, the defending national champion at 119 pounds, defeated sophomore squad-mate Travis Miller in a 135-pound contest. Two-time national champion (112-lbs.) Willie Lloyd made his season debut in the Friday Night ring by decisioning sophomore Jesse Horton at 119 pounds.
Junior Ryan Price became the night's first winner from the blue corner, as he took a 157-pound decision from sophomore Nathan Liptak. Taking another win for the red corner, senior Jahmil Edwards picked up a referee-stopped (second round) victory over freshman Ken Kaczmarek at 152 pounds.
Freshman Kanit Daratutana took the judges' decision from sophomore Dennis Marzo in another 119-pound bout, while junior Regan Dela Cruz earned a split decision at 153 pounds over freshman Dal David. Junior Mike Tolzien defeated freshman Isaac Houston at 175 pounds when the referee stopped their bout in the first round.
The night's only other winner from the blue corner was junior Bruce Jamison, who earned a 180-pound decision from sophomore Elon Brumfield. Senior Eric Garcia closed out the fall semester of boxing with a decision over classmate Adam Merello in a 205-pound showdown.
Air Force returns to the ring on Jan. 12 with another round of Friday Night Fights. The first bell will sound at 4:30 p.m., in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym.
