Air Force Closes Out Fall Semester with Exciting Friday Night Action
Dec. 5, 2008
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force boxing team closed out the fall semester with another hard-hitting round of Friday Night Fights on Dec. 5 in the Academy's Upper Boxing Room. In their final competition before finals and the holiday break, 20 boxers stepped into the ring for another stellar showcase. "It's gratifying to see the boxers learn and grow from their matches and ring time this semester," assistant coach 1Lt Blake Baldi said following the match. Junior Bailey Ball was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week, after taking a come-from-behind decision over sophomore Michael Dunn in the night's 154-pound bout. Using a good combination and hard right, Ball was able to overtake Dunn in the final round. It is the first weekly honor this season for Ball, who improved to 3-0 in Friday Night action. Senior Dean Chuva opened the night with a decision over classmate Dave Simon in a 132-pound bout. Fellow senior Harvey White improved to 3-0 against other cadets, as he took a decision over sophomore Michael Mizes in the 134-pound contest. Sophomore Joseph Silvio decisioned senior Sean May at 160 pounds. In his first Friday Night action of the year, senior Boyce Loomis won the 195-pound bout with classmate Andrew Catoire, when the referee stopped the contest in the second round.
"Boyce showed me the kind of aggressive attitude it takes not only to be a Wing champion, but a national champion," head coach Eddie Weichers commented. "He led by example this evening and I hope that the entire team took note." Freshman Michael McLain picked up his second intra-wing victory, earning the judges' decision over senior Elon Brumfield in a 182-pound bout. Senior Justin Lee defeated sophomore Dalton Hall in a 170-pound bout. Another standout bout that caught the coaches' attention was the heavyweight match between sophomore Mike Chambers and junior Dave Miller. In a closely contested bout that saw the two contenders toe-to-toe for much of the six minute bout, Chambers claimed a close split-decision victory. Freshman Logan Brandt earned a victory in his first collegiate bout, defeating sophomore Scott Lewis in the 187-pound match, when the referee stopped the contest in the first round. Junior Seth Gunn closed out the night with a decision over freshman Tyrus Korecki at 160 pounds. Following their three-week hiatus for finals and the holiday break, the Falcons return to action on Jan. 16 for another round of Friday Night Fights. RESULTS FROM FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS |
