Nov. 20, 2009
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Freshman Ben Fox highlighted five champions during the Air Force boxing team's Nov. 20 round of Friday Night Fights. The night featured one member of the intercollegiate squad and nine first-year boxers. Fox, improving to 3-0 on the year, was awarded the program's Boxer of the Week award following a 151-pound decision over sophomore Craig Spanger.
Competing in the second bout of the night, Fox used constant pressure and good combinations to defeat Spranger in a closely contested matchup
Sophomore Rainer Caparas, the night's lone representative of the intercollegiate team, opened the night with a decision over rookie Andrew Pineda at 126 pounds. Following the bout between Fox and Spranger, freshman Kenneth Montel earned his first victory in his first attempt with a 165-pound decision over sophomore Evan Twohig.
Freshman Jake Alleman improved to 2-1 on the season with a 174-pound decision over senior Metin Alaybeyoglu, while freshman Kyle Rasmussen picked up his initial win at 147 pounds, taking a decision from classmate William Petersen.
"Everyone stepped up, fought hard and gained valuable experience leading into the fall conclusion," assistant coach Capt Blake Baldi said following the match. "Determination and desire were key elements in all of the matches. It was evident that everyone wanted to make a statement and be ranked on the `Champions and Challengers' board. The coaches have noticed an improvement in conditioning and technique since the first round of Friday Night Fights."
Select Falcons will travel to New York, N.Y., for the annual NCBA Invitational at the New York City Athletic Club on Monday, Nov. 23, while the rest of the squad returns to the Cadet Gym Boxing Room on Dec. 4 for the final round of Friday Night Fights for the fall semester.
