Eric Garcia Earns Boxer of the Week Honors

Nov. 17, 2006

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -  With numerous new faces and 14 bouts on the board, the Air Force boxing team hosted another exciting round of Friday Night Fights this evening (Nov. 17) in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym. Eight of the 14 bouts were stopped early be the referee, including the heavyweight bout of Eric Garcia, who was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week.

Despite facing a taller opponent in Matthew Burton, Garcia used a hard right early in the first round to gain his opponent's attention.  Applying pressure throughout the first two rounds, Garcia was able to have the bout stopped in the second round.

Matthew McPhail opened the evening with a referee-stopped-contest (second) over James Quon at 127 pound.  Seth Gunn followed that up with a referee-stopped-contest (third) over Mike Nettis at 143 pounds.

The next three bouts were decided by the judges, as all victories were earned by decision. Daryn Nelson claimed a 160-pound split-decision win over Trevor Cook, while Elon Brumfield and Patrick Wanko tallied wins at 180 pounds. Brumfield decisioned Jon Andresen, while Wanko earned the win over Mike Tolzien.

Three of the final four bouts didn't reach the final bell, as the referee stopped them all early. Quinton Croff earned a win at 165 pounds following a second-round stoppage against Matt Lundquist, while John Doeseckle also claimed a second-round victory; his over John Pulli at 164 pounds.

Isaac Houston's 172-pound bout with Joel Holley was stopped in the first round and Adam Merello's heavyweight contest with Tyler Cody was stopped in the second. Book-ended by those two bouts was a 166-pound contest. Hyongdong Kim took a decision from the judges over Frederick Diederick.

Three of the Falcons' NCBA All-Americans will travel to New York, N.Y., on Monday, Nov. 20, to face other National Collegiate Boxing Association schools at the New York Athletic Club.  National champions Willie Lloyd and Ian Tuznik will represent the Academy, along with bronze medalist Joe Conrad, at the national meet.
