Air Force Boxers Shine During Friday Night Fights
Nov. 13, 2009
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - One week after defeating Army in NCBA action, the Air Force boxing team returned to intra-wing competition with another successful round of Friday Night Fights on Nov. 13. In a night that featured nine hard-hitting bouts, senior Cory Tintzman was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week, after taking a referee-stopped victory in the night's heavyweight contest.
Juniors Joe Silvio and Michael Dunn opened the event with a competitive 162-pound contest. Silvio, a hard-hitting southpaw, took the decision after scoring on a good straight left hand. Junior Michael Mizes took a decision from sophomore Rainer Caparas in the 134-pound contest, while sophomore Nick Cataldo decisioned classmate Spencer Baucke in a 178-point matchup.
In one of the best bouts of the night, freshman Benjamin Fox earned a narrow decision over classmate Glenn Miltenberg in the 153-pound contest. Although the pair has combined for just three collegiate bouts, they showcased a talent beyond their experience level.
"I was impressed with the skill level shown by both boxers," assistant coach Capt Blake Baldi said after the bout. "It was a close decision. All of the coaches and judges commented on how skilled the two rookies were."
Sophomore Craig Spranger took a decision from freshman Kyle Rasmussen in a 150-pound bout, before Tintzman and junior Mike Chambers stepped into the ring for the heavyweight contest. Using an aggressive ring presence, Tintzman took control of the fight early. Landing strong right hands, Tintzman was determined to take the bout out of the judges' hands and get an early win. His hard work paid off, as the referee stopped the bout in the second round.
Junior Ryan Curry defeated senior Metin Alaybeyoglu by decision in the 172-pound bout, while sophomore Nicholas Rogers took a decision from classmate Evan Twohig in a 167-pound battle of Cadet Squadron 25. Freshman Jake Alleman closed out the night with a 173-pound decision over classmate Clayton Elliott.
The Falcons return to action next week (Nov. 20), when they host another round of Friday Night Fights. Action will begin at 4:30 p.m., in the Academy's Boxing Room.
