Falcons Wraps Up Action at Friday Night Fights
Nov. 12, 2010
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - After nearly a month of competitions on the road, the Air Force boxing team returned to the Academy this evening (Nov. 12) for another round of Friday Night Fights. The contest featured eight bouts, ranging from 127 pounds to 195 pounds, that all went to decisions. Zac Spranger was chosen as the Academy's Boxer of the Week after winning the 195-pound bout.
Competing in the final bout of the night, Spranger took a decision from fellow CS-06 member Joshua Mills. Spranger pressured Mills for most of the bout, using his power to land solid scoring blows. Both boxers left the coaching staff pleased with the amount of heart shown, as they put on a good show for the crowd within the Cadet Gym Boxing Room.
Joe Silvio took a 160-pound victory from Tyrus Korecki, in a rematch of last year's Wing Open finals. Silvio, who also earned last March's decision, claimed a split decision this afternoon in a hard-fought bout. An aggressive Korecki caught Silvio with a hard right hand in the second round, but Silvio was able to work through it and claim the judge's vote.
Michael Mizes and Will Petersen also met up for a rematch of last year's Wing Open. The pair, who battled at Clune Arena in March at 132 pounds, stepped into the ring tonight for a 138-pound contest. Mizes defeated Peterson for the second time, despite being at a disadvantage in terms of height. Mizes used strong combination punches to defeat a much-improved Peterson.
In the 168-pound bout, Casey Habluetzel defeated Dalton Hall, the defending Wing Open champion at 165 pounds. Habluetzel used good movement, footwork and solid counterpunching to take the decision. Derek Demyanek, competing in the first bout of his career, defeated Cooper Zielinski in a 180-pound bout. The southpaw used good movement and a solid one-two combination to earn the deicsion.
Six other Falcons took to the ring, including defending national champion Matt DeMars, who defeated Rainer Caparas in a 127-pound bout. Patrick Ryan took the judges' vote from Vance Hawk at 181 pounds, while Stephen Bittner won his 129-pound bout with Simon Duong.
