Daryn Nelson Claims Victory at Service Academy Showcase
Oct. 26, 2007
DETROIT, Mich. - Senior Daryn Nelson picked up the only victory of the night for the Air Force boxing team, as the Falcons wrapped up competition at the annual Service Academy Showcase on Friday, Oct. 26, at the Detroit Athletic Club. Nelson, competing in the 160-pound weight class, earned a referee-stopped-contest win over Army's Nick Antonio.
Five other Falcons also competed against contenders from their sister service academies and all five outcomes were determined by the judges' decision. Junior Dean Chuva dropped 119-pound bout to Navy's Mikoto Yoshida, while Army's Matt Longo earned a victory over junior Jesse Horton at 122 pounds.
Sophomore Alexander Shin lost to Navy's David Miller at 135 pounds and junior Boyce Loomis fell in a 185-pound bout to Navy's Matt Cox. Junior Sean May rounded out the Air Force contingent, falling to Army's J.T. Taylor in a 150-pound contest.
Army and Navy each accounted for four individual victories, but two of Army's came over boxers from Navy to give the Black Knights the team championship. Air Force finished third with one individual winner.
The Falcons return to the Academy on Friday, Nov. 2, when they host Army in the annual showdown between the service academies. Action is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m., in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym.
