DETROIT, Mich. - The Air Force boxing team claimed three victories over Navy during the annual Service Academy Classic on Friday, Oct. 25, at the historic Detroit Athletic Club. Seniors Stephen Bittner, James Monk and Denis Vorobyov claimed the individual titles for the Falcons, while Vorobyov earned the team's Boxer of the Week award.
The meet, also known as the Chuck Davey Boxing Classic, featured contenders from the three service academies. With five victories, Army won the team title, while Air Force finished second with three wins and Navy placed third with one.
Vorobyov claimed Boxer of the Week honor after defeating Navy's Sean Hunt in a 175-pound showdown. The senior's win over Hunt capped off an Air Force sweep of the Midshipmen, as Bittner earned the judges' decision over Carlos Perez in the 128-pound bout and Monk picked up a victory-by-decision over Andre Moorehead at 159 pounds.
Three other Air Force boxers also competed at the DAC, falling by decision to their counterparts from Army. Roy Taylor lost to Jeremias Ortiz in the 132-pound bout, while Ethan Salgado fell to Gavin Chapman in the 142-pound match and Gytenis Borusas lost a decision to Jacob Conley at 190 pounds.
In the night's other contests, Army claimed wins over Navy at 165 pounds (Shawn Gray dec. RJ Garcia) and 180 pounds (Josh Quintana dec. Jourdan Looney). Navy earned its lone victory in the 147-pound bout, when Dan O'Neill defeated Army's Miguel Archuletta in a referee-stopped-contest.
The Falcons return to action next Friday (Nov. 1), when they host a rematch with Army in the Cadet Gym Boxing Room. The annual meet is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m.
