Fresh Faces Highlight Air Force Debut of Friday Night Fights
Oct. 7, 2011
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - There were numerous new faces in the ring this evening, as the Air Force boxing team opened its home with the first of seven rounds of Friday Night Fights in the Academy's Boxer Room. Sophomore Derek Demyanek was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week.
Demyanek won his 182-pound contest with Adetunji Fisayo, when the referee stopped the bout in the third round. After starting slow with good one-two combinations, Demyanek found his body attack early in the second round. Continuing his attack into the third round, he caught Fisayo with enough hard body shots to force the referee to call the bout.
Four additional contests were stopped early by the judges. Junior Glenn Miltenberg defeated sophomore John Alora in the second round of a 154-pound bout, while Michael Magtalas earned the third-round win over Vincente Vasquez at 130 pounds. Tramaine Barnett took a victory in the first-round of his 153-pound bout with Tatsuki Watts, while Marcus Shannon defeated his 165-pound opponent in Robert Schlipp during the second round.
A bout that caught the coaches' attention was the 200-pound bout between newcomers Ethan Biddy and Harry Baumeister. The pair lit up the crowd, standing toe-to-toe for the full three rounds, throwing punches from all directions. Biddy won the judges' decision by using a powerful left lead to keep his opponent on the defensive.
Esteban Perez defeated Coleman Vivian at 116 pounds, while Stephen Bittner (vs. Julian Gluck) and Gerald Lara (vs. Miguel Martinez) claimed decisions in their respective 131- and 138-pound bouts. Malcom Price decisioned Alexis Zuniga at 155-pounds, while Kyle Gladney (vs. Chris De La Torre) and Trevor Enos (vs. Alex Kim) each won 160-pound contests. Aaron Wurster took a 172-pound decision from Chris Nelson and Matt Anthony decisioned Zigmas Polinauskas at 178 pounds.
Action continues next on Oct. 14, with another round of Friday Night Fights.
