Falcons Open Season with 13 Hard-Hitting Bouts
Sept. 28, 2012
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Backed by returning intercollegiate talent and talented prospects, the Air Force boxing team officially kicked off the new season tonight (Sept. 28) with a round of Friday Night Fights in the Cadet Gym Boxing Room. Will Petersen was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week.
Petersen earned the program's first weekly honor of the 2012-13 academic year after defeating Andrew Munoz in a 140-pound bout. Peterson used a hard jab and an excellent one-two combination to keep Munoz on his heels and unable to mount a sustained attack.
The 130-pound bout, which featured a rematch of last year's 125-pound Wing Open Championship final, saw Roy Taylor defeat Stephen Bittner in a hard-fought decision. Mateus Arcano won the night's lightest bout (125 pounds) over Anthony Reil, while Jacob Berggren decisioned Don Macary at 140 pounds. Sean Cork defeated John Alora by decision in the 152-pound bout.
The Falcons held two matches at the 162-pound weight division, with James Monk (David Jorgensen) and Mike Leland (Kyle Gladney) earning the victories. There will also two bouts at 180 pounds, as Logan Brandt won his bout with Justin Smith and Max Zendali defeated Joseph Hayes in the second bout. Chris Nelson earned the decision over Zigmas Polinauskas at 170 pounds, while Collin Fleck won his 175-pound bout with Lloyd Bradley.
Only two of the 13 bouts didn't reach the final bell. Gytenis Borusas used a good jab and nice right hand to set up a body attack that led the referee to stop his 195-pound contest with Harry Baumeister in the second round. Peter Coote also earned a referee-stopped victory, as the official halted his 133-pound bout with Ramy Korkis-Kanaan in the first round.
Air Force returns to action next Friday (Oct. 5), when it hosts the annual showdown with service academy rival Navy at 4:30 p.m., in the Cadet Gym Boxing Room.
