Falcons Post 3-2 Record on Opening Day of NCBA Championships

    WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Air Force boxing team opened competition at the 2011 National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Championships with three quarterfinal victories at Eisenhower Hall in West Point, N.Y., on Thursday, April 7. The Falcons, who sent five boxers into the ring during the first day of national action, compiled a 3-2 record.

    Junior Dan Starr, senior Joe Silvio and classmate Will Keuchler claimed victories for the Falcons in the quarterfinal round of action.

    In his first national championship bout, Starr took a decision from Maryland's Dan Contreras at 139 pounds, while Silvio defeated Navy's David Faerber, the East Region champion, in a 156-pound contest. Keuchler, also competing in his first NCBA Championship bout, took a 185-pound decision from West Virginia's PJ Sheridon.

    Senior Michael Mizes and junior Craig Spranger also competed tonight, dropping decisions to their opponents. Mizes fell in a 132-pound bout to Army's Langston Clark, while Spranger, in his national debut, lost a decision to Navy's TJ Setzer at 147 pounds.

    Starr, Silvio and Keuchler advanced to tomorrow's semifinal round, where they will be joined by five more Falcons. The two semifinal sessions will take place at noon and 4 p.m., at West Point's Eisenhower Hall.
