NCBA Quarterfinals Get Acrobat Reader

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. -- The Air Force boxing team collected six victories during the opening night of action at the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Championships in Lawrenceburg, Ind., on Thursday, April 6. The Falcons, who sent nine varsity-level boxers into the ring during tonight's quarterfinal round at the Lawrenceburg Events Center, posted a 6-3 overall record.

Headlined by a first-round win from senior Landon Tomcho, two of the Falcons' wins were stopped early by the referee. Tomcho came out strong and earned a 139-pound victory over Navy's Toshie Oue before the first two-minute round was complete. Junior Osama Farqaleet also earned an early victory, as the referee stopped his 125-pound bout with California's Kevin Reber in the second round.

The Falcons' remaining bouts were sent to the judges for a decision, with Air Force claiming four wins.

Senior Pedro Barrientes decisioned Navy's Taras Klymyuk in the 147-pound bout, while classmates Johnny Wells (156-pound win over Penn State's Ian Vernon) and Kellen Cleveland (heavyweight win over Miami's Parker Brown) earned the judges' vote in their respective weight divisions. Junior Naji Bsesio rounded out the victorious quartet after taking a decision from Iowa State's Jake Swoyer at 165 pounds.

Three additional Falcons made their national debut this evening, but suffered losses in the opening round. Freshman Levi Rate dropped a 132-pound decision to Army West Point's Vonn Grant, while classmate Vlad Zhukov fell in his 175-pound bout with the Black Knights' Curtis Estes and junior Joe Asenuga lost his 185-pound contest to California's Nikolay Velkov.

Two members of the women's club team also competed during today's quarterfinal round. Laura Drapinski dropped a 112-pound contest to Navy's Sophie Leckas, while Madison Wilson lost her 132-pound bout to Washington's Zasha Sepulveda in the third round.

Tonight's winners, plus several boxers that had byes in tonight's quarterfinals, return to The Lawrenceburg Events Center tomorrow (April 7) for the national semifinals.
