DeMars, Horton and Loomis Claim NCBA National Titles
April 4, 2009
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore Matthew DeMars, senior Jesse Horton and senior Boyce Loomis won national titles, as the Air Force boxing team concluded competition at the 2009 National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Championships on Saturday, April 4, in College Park, Md. The trio accounted for the best title haul since 2006, when the Falcons also collected three belts.
As an unopposed 112-pound contender throughout the Wing Open and regional championships, as well as the first two rounds of the national meet, DeMars competed in his first bout since Feb. 13. The layoff didn't seem to affect the sophomore in his national debut, as he took a decision from Navy's Logan Hershman. DeMars finished the season with a perfect 6-0 record.
Horton concluded his collegiate career the same way he began it - winning a national title. The 2007 national champion at 119 pounds claimed his second title by taking a decision from Army's Andrew Manglicmont. With a 5-2 overall record, Horton remained perfect against NCBA opponents 4-0.
Loomis, the Falcons' team captain, captured his first NCBA belt with a decisional victory over Army's Jody Chapman in the 185-pound bout. Loomis, who finished his senior campaign with a 10-1 record, was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week by the coaching staff.
"We had a good night," head coach Eddie Weichers said. "This was the toughest tournament that I have been a part of in my 33 years of coaching. Everyone brought their "A" game. There were no easy bouts. But, we had a good run and got out healthy."
Overall, the Falcons finished third with 34 points ... just one point behind second-place Navy (35 points). A bout between Navy and Coast Guard was leaning in the favor of the Coast Guard, which would've let the Falcons overtake Navy, but doctors stopped the bout in the final round when the Coast Guard boxer suffered a broken nose. Army won its second national title in as many years with 53 points.
