Four Falcons Advance to NCBA Championship Finals

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Four members of the Air Force boxing team picked up semifinal victories on Friday, April 4, as the Falcons continued action at the 2014 National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Championships in West Point, N.Y. Air Force accounted for a 4-5 record during the second night of national competition.
After receiving a bye into the semifinals, sophomore Mateus Arcano opened the day with a 112-pound victory over Army's Tyler Croft. The Falcons earned an additional pair of victories during the afternoon session, as senior Stephen Bittner and sophomore Jacob Berggren earned decisions in their respective weight divisions. Bittner decisioned UC Davis' Mac Pham at 125 pounds, while Berggren defeated Coast Guard's Trevor Pennyfeather at 139 pounds.
Senior James Monk claimed Air Force's lone victory during the evening session, defeating Lock Haven's Zachary Rice at 156 pounds.
Five additional Falcons competed during today's semifinal round, with two suffering losses in the afternoon session and three falling in the evening round. Freshman Adam Sumait lost his 119-pound decision to Army's Alan Alvarado, while senior Sean Cork fell in his 147-pound bout to Navy's Andre Moorehead. Senior Denis Vorobyov concluded his collegiate career with a referee-stopped loss to Penn State's Corey Slosburg at 165 pounds, while junior Brandon Pitts was decisioned by Coast Guard's Taylor Tennyson at 175 pounds and freshman Laurynas Galdikas lost to Army's Faaoloataga Pulou in the 195-pound weight division.
The NCBA Championships conclude tomorrow (April 5) with the national finals at 7 p.m.
