Falcons Post 5-2 Record in NCBA Regional Debut

RENO, Nev. - The Air Force boxing team posted a 5-2 record during the semifinal round of competition at the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Western Regional Championships in Reno, Nev., on Friday, March 22.
In its first two bouts of the regional meet, Air Force claimed victories over contenders from UC Davis. Sophomore Roy Taylor decisioned Mack Pham at 125 pounds, while freshman Jacob Berggren claimed a decision over Steve Le at 132 pounds.
Following a loss by senior Will Petersen (Gabriel Sanchez, San Jose State) in the 139-pound contest, Air Force claimed another pair of victories. Senior Glenn Miltenberg took a decision from San Jose State's Oscar Gomez at 147 pounds, while junior James Monk earned a 156-pound semifinal victory over Washington's Sam Frankel.
The Falcons split their final two bouts of the night against opponents from Washington. Senior Logan Brandt dropped a 175-pound decision to Richard Vansicklen, before freshman Phil Mays closed out the night with a referee-stopped victory over Max McDonald at 185 pounds.
Sophomore Michael Magtalas (119 pounds) and junior Denis Vorobyov (165) received first-round byes and will join the five event winners in the finals of the NCBA Western Regional Championships. The final round of regional competition will take place at 7 p.m. tomorrow (March 23) at Reno's Eldorado Hotel.
