RENO, Nev. – Seniors Adam Sumait and Landon Tomcho claimed regional titles, as the Air Force boxing team finished second at the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Western Regional Championships, which were held March 17-18 in Reno. Overall, the men advanced all 11 boxers to the national meet next month, accounting for two champions, seven regional runners-up and two third-place finishers.
Sumait claimed his third straight Western Regional title, as he earned a decision over Washington’s Jomel Cortes in the 119-pound championship, and Tomcho, who produced a dominate display from the opening bell and forced the referee to stop his 139-pound bout with Washington’s Naveed Shaiiwayana, successfully defended his Western Regional title.
The men accounted for seven runner-up finishes at the regional meet. After a dominating performance in the first two rounds of his 125-pound bout, junior Osama Farqaleet lost to Washington’s Hang Thao following a questionable stoppage in the third round. Senior Pedro Barrientes dropped a 147-pound decision to Washington’s James Porter, while classmate Johnny Wells dropped a 2-1 split decision to Nevada’s Zack Smith in the 156-pound final.
Junior Naji Bseiso lost a decision to Washington’s Jasper Bourgette at 165 pounds, while classmate Den Tati-Mackaya dropped a decision to three-time NCBA champion Garrett Felling of Nevada in the 195-pound championship bout. The bouts for freshman Vlad Zhukov and senior Kellen Cleveland were stopped before the final bell, as Zhukov lost to UNLV’s Daniil Kovalev at 175 pounds and Cleveland fell to Washington’s Eric Peterson in the heavyweight bout.
Junior Joe Asenuga finished third in the regional bout after losing a decision to California’s Nikolai Velkov during the 185-pound semifinal bout on Friday, March 17. Freshman Levi Rate received the true-third placement at 132 pounds – and an advancing spot to the national meet – after falling to Nevada’s Dustin Congdon in the semifinals and defeating Daniel Chan from UC Davis in a third-place bout on Saturday.
On the women’s side, Victoria Rodriguez earned a decision over Washington’s Diana Van Hoosier in the 156-pound contest, while two other boxers earned runner-up finishes at the regional meet. Heather Parcasio dropped a 125-pound decision to Washington’s two-time defending champion Jacque Ines, while Adrienne Yoder lost a 139-pound bout to Marsha Cavazos of USC. The women also earned a pair of third-place finishes from Laura Drapinski (112 pounds) and Madison Wilson (132 pounds), who lost their semifinal bouts to Washington’s Renada Walcome and California’s Jacqueline Garcia, respectively.
The Falcons return to action on April 6-8, when they travel to Lawrenceburg, Ind., for the 2017 National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Championships at the Lawrenceburg Event Center.
