USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The Wing Open roster was finalized this afternoon, as seven members of the Air Force boxing team secured their place in the finals with semifinal victories on Friday, Feb. 23. Levi Rate was named the Academy’s Boxer of the Week, while the bracket was determined for five weight classes.
Rate advanced to the finals in the 147-pound weight division after forcing the referee to stop his bout with William Winstead in the third round. Rate will face Adeola Adeboyejo, who captured a decision over 2017 finalist Dillon Willis. Like Rate, Naji Bseiso also earned a victory before the final bell, as he caused the referee to halt his bout with Austin Bohler in the second round. He will toe the line with Levi Knox, who decisioned Isaiah Honable in the other 165-pound semifinal.
William Ragland won his 156-pound semifinal over PJ Gorman, while Neptally Trujillo (175 pounds, vs Elijah Calloway) and Nick Pingel (185 pounds, vs Deon Dodd) advanced to the finals after claiming decisions in their respective bouts.
The 2018 Wing Open Boxing Championships take place next Thursday (March 1) under the lights of Clune Arena. Admission is free for the event, which is slated to begin at 6:00 p.m., but donations will be accepted to benefit a member of the Dean of Faculty’s staff who recently suffered a medical emergency that incurred significant out-of-pocket expenses.
