USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force boxing team kicked off the 59th-annual Wing Open Tournament this afternoon (Feb. 16) with four quarterfinal bouts at the Academy. Sophomore Josh Turner earned the team’s Boxer of the Week award following his victory in one of two first-round bouts at 156 pounds.
Turner earned the only referee-stopped victory of the night, as he forced the official to stop his quarterfinal contest with classmate Robert Hugo in the second round.
Freshman Jacob Ragland picked up the first 156-pound semifinal berth, as he opened the night with a decision over fellow freshman Ben Isley. The other two quarterfinal bouts were contested in the 165-pound weight division, with freshman Devon Smith and sophomore Levi Knox earning the advancing decisions. Smith claimed a decision over junior Neptaly Trujillo in the first contest, while Knox earned the judges’ vote in his bout with freshman Alex Hankhouse.
The four victors from tonight’s quarterfinal round return to the Cadet Boxing Room next Friday (Feb. 24) for the semifinals of the Wing Open Tournament. The meet, which is scheduled to feature 12 bouts ranging from 119 to 185 pounds, will begin at 4:30 p.m.
