Falcons Continue Action in Wing Open Tournament

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force boxing team continued Wing Open action this week, with the quarterfinal round of competition on Wednesday, Feb. 15. Junior Chris Nelson earned the Academy's Boxer of the Week award.
Nelson earned the team's weekly honor after defeating Arpan Patel in a 165-pound bout. Using an aggressive approach, Nelson forced the referee to step in during the first round and stop the contest.
The quarterfinal round featured three contests at the 165-pound weight class. In addition to Nelson, Zigmas Plinauskas and Matt Anthony advanced to the semifinal round. Polinauskas used good ring generalship throughout the bout to earn the decision over TJ Rowland, while Anthony claimed a decision over Clayton Elliott.
In one of the night's best bouts, Mike Leland defeated Kyle Gladney by decision at 156 pounds. Leland was able to work hard for the full six minutes to out-point his opponent and earn the judges' decision. Leland was one of three Falcons to advance out of the 156-pound weight class. Nolan Hebein decisioned Juan Jose Rodriguez, while Blaze Dunn earned a referee-stopped victory (third round) over Conor Crawford.
In the only 147-pound bout of the night, John Alora earned a victory over Garrett Gamble after he forced the referee to halt the bout in the second round.
Tyrus Korecki (156 pounds) and Charles Weeks (175 pounds) advanced out of the quarterfinals due to forfeits by their opponents.
The Falcons return to the ring next Tuesday (Feb. 21) for the Wing Open Semifinals at 4:30 p.m.
