Falcons Kick Off Wing Open Tournament with 11 Bouts

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force boxing team officially kicked off the Wing Open Tournament this evening (Thursday, Feb. 14) with 11 quarterfinal bouts in the 147- to 185-pound weight classes. Freshman Philip Mays was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week.
Mays picked up the first weekly award of his career after landing fast, straight jabs to Chad Turney, en route to a referee-stopped victory in the final bout of the night at 185 pounds. Mays was one of five Falcons to claim victory by referee-stopped-contests. Nolan Hebein (156 pounds, Jacob Bessler), Sean Cork (147 pounds, Matt Medara), Giorgio Zendali (175 pounds, Josh Burdett) and Justin Smith (175 pounds, Collin Fleck) all claimed victories before the final bell sounded.
Kyle Gladney and Mike Leland joined Hebein as winner from the 156-pounds weight class. Gladney defeated Will Dengler by decision, while Leland picked up a decision over Michael Kelly. Three quarterfinal bouts were also contested at 165 pounds, with Brandon Pitts (Grant Hemberger), Denis Vorobyov (Zigmas Polinauskas) and Nicholas Holguin (Javier Arana) all winning by decision. Gyntenis Borusas also advanced out of the quarterfinals, as he decisioned Jake Alleman in the second 185-pound bout.
The winners return to the ring next Wednesday (Feb. 20) for the semifinal round of Wing Open Tournament. Action begins at 4:30 p.m., in the Cadet Gym Boxing Room.
