Wing Open Action Heats Up with 10 Quarterfinal Bouts

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Wing Open Tournament action continued tonight (Feb. 14) with 10 hard-hitting quarterfinal matches in the Academy's Upper Boxing Room. The bracket was narrowed down in three different weight classes (156-, 165- and 175-pounds), as the field of contenders continues to shrink. Junior Austin Almand was named the Boxer of the Week after a strong decisional win in a 165-pound contest.
All four spots in the 156-pound semifinal bracket were determined tonight. Senior Ryan Price opened the night with a decision over freshman Marcus Tenenbaum, while Rudy Bowen took a decision from sophomore John Doeseckle. Senior Daryn Nelson took a victory from sophomore Charles Reynolds, when the referee stopped their contest in the first round. Freshman Joseph Silvio decisioned classmate Christopher De La Torre in the final 156-pound contest.
Junior Justin Lee took the first of three bouts in the 165-pound weight class, as he decisioned freshman Palmer Roux. Senior Clifford Moore moved one step closer to defending his Wing Open title, as he earned a referee-stopped (second round) win over freshman Will Remington. Almand earned a hard-hitting decision over senior Mike Tolzien in the final bout of that weight class.
Three places were available in next week's lineup at the 175-pound weight class. Senior Jacob Lambach earned a split decision over classmate and two-time Wing Open finalist Bruce Jamison. Junior Andrew Catoire decisioned classmate Jon Andresen, while fellow junior Elon Brumfield defeated classmate Matt Jensen by decision.
The Falcons return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 20, with the Wing Open semifinals, Action begins at 4:30 p.m., in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym.
