Air Force Tallies 5-4 Mark in Regular Season Finale
Feb. 1, 2013
RENO, Nev. - The Air Force boxing team closed out the 2012-13 regular season with a 5-4 record against National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) competition in Reno, Nev., on Friday, Feb. 1. Michael Magtalas was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week.
After a slow start to his 122-pound contest against Jay Doh of UNLV, Magtalas adjusted to his hard-charging opponent and used lateral movement and counters to score big in the second and third rounds. His ring generalship in the latter two rounds awarded Magtalas a hard-fought decision.
In the Falcons' heaviest bout of the night, Philip Mays defeated Nevada's Ozzie Aramas in a referee-stopped contest. After being on the receiving end of some big shots in the opening round, Mays rebounded in the second session with stiff jabs and a hard one-two combination that caught Aramas off guard and forced the referee to call the bout in the second round.
Jacob Berggren also earned a referee-stopped victory, as the official called his 132-pound bout with Nevada's Adam Boa in the third round. Mateus Arcano claimed a 115-pound decision over Mike Santos of Santa Clara in the night's lightest bout, while Logan Brandt took a decision from Nevada's Nic Anderson in the 175-pound contest.
Four other Air Force boxers - Drew Pineda (119 pounds vs. Vihn Tahi, UNLV), Ethan Salgado (133 pounds vs. Jarred Santos, Nevada), Andrew Munoz (139 pounds vs. Taylor Yancey, Nevada) and Mike Leland (156 pounds vs. Colin Schmidt, UC Davis) also competed at the NCBA event, but dropped their contests by judges' decision.
The Falcons open the Wing Open tournament on Thursday (Feb. 7) with the preliminary round of competition at 4:30 p.m., in the Cadet Gym Boxing Room.
