Seven Bouts Kick Off Wing Open Tournament

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force boxing team kicked off the 2014 Wing Open Tournament this afternoon (Feb. 6) with seven quarterfinal bouts in the Academy's Cadet East Gym. The first round of competition featured bouts in six weight classes, ranging from 132 to 175 pounds.
Sophomore Jamal Johnson picked up the first victory of the tournament, defeating senior Khoa Huynh in the 132-pound bout. Freshman Raymond Wayne followed with a 139-pound victory over senior Sage Keltee, when the referee stopped their contest before the final bell. For his efforts, Wayne was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week.
Two bouts were contested in the 147-pound weight class, with sophomore Matt Medara and freshman Pedro Barrientes earning the judges' decisions over freshmen Matt Medara and Rob Farley .Jr., respectively.
Freshman Taylor Lopez Olijnyk advanced to the 156-pound semifinals after taking a decision from sophomore Alejandro Rodriguez, while sophomore Jesse Calico decisioned freshman Chris Rauch-Gish in the 165-pound quarterfinal. In the day's final bout, sophomore Chad Turney earned an advancing decision over classmate Otto Sunday in the 175-pound bout.
The Wing Open Tournament continues next Wednesday (Feb. 12), when the team returns to Cadet East Gym for 14 semifinal bouts.
