RENO, Nev. - The Air Force boxing team closed out the regular season with four victories on Friday, Feb. 4, against opponents from the National Collegiate Boxing Association. Facing boxers from Nevada and Washington in Reno, Nev., the Falcons tallied a 4-5 overall record. Sophomore Will Peterson was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week, following his victory at 135 pounds.

"We brought a lot of young guys here and this was a good experience for them," assistant coach Capt Blake Baldi said. "Everybody fought tough, but there were a few decisions we didn't get."

Peterson handed Nevada its only loss of the night, as he defeated Taylor Clancy in the 135-pound bout. The sophomore utilized his reach advantage over his opponent to connect with good jabs and catch Clancy coming inside. Boxing what the coaches called a "really smart fight", Peterson forced the referee to stop the contest early.

Air Force improved to 6-0 against Washington this season, claiming another three wins over its NCBA opponents. Andrew Munoz defeated Peter Knox at 139 pounds, when the referee stopped their bout in the first round. Zack Spranger rebounded from a tough loss last week to decision Shadain Akavan at 200 pounds, while Craig Spranger got a good win over Peter Odell at 147 pounds.

The five Air Force losses all came at the hands of Nevada boxers, competing in their home ring. Tyrus Korecki lost by decision to Jeremy Catalano at 162 pounds, while Patrick Ryan was decisioned by Anthony Donahue (165 pounds) and Michael Mizes fell by decision to Andrew Morales (132 pounds). Derek Demyanck lost his 173-pound bout with Dylan Crosby when the referee ended their bout in the second round and Dennis Vorobyov's 178-pound bout with Will Dixon was stopped in the third round.

Air Force returns to the Academy to begin the 2011 Wing Open Tournament on Thursday, Feb. 10. Wing Open action will continue throughout the month of February, culminating with the Wing Open Championships on Thursday, March 4, at 7 p.m., in Clune Arena.
