Ball and Johnson Claim Victories for Falcons
    Daryn Nelson earns Boxer of the Week for fourth time.

    RENO, Nev. - Sophomore Bailey Ball and senior Chris Johnson claimed victories for the Air Force boxing team, as the Falcons wrapped up competition at a National Collegiate Boxing Association meet in Reno, Nev., late Friday night (Feb. 1). As a team, the Falcons compiled a 2-6 record against a predominantly home crowd.

    In his first collegiate competition (non-Friday Night Fight bout), Ball opened the competition with a 145-pound decision over Cal's David Keegan. Johnson followed that up with a decisional victory over Jason Crocco of UNLV in a 185-pound bout.

    Junior Austin Almand lost a questionable decision to Nevada's Jacob Munson-Decker in a 164-pound contest, before Travis Murray, an Academy exchange student from Coast Guard, dropped a 165-pound decision to Greg Murrell of UNLV.

    Senior Daryn Nelson dropped a close, controversial decision to Nevada's Ryan Kotey, but was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week following the 158-pound bout. It is Nelson's second BOW title in as many weeks and his fourth of the season. Although it appeared Nelson was winning the bout, he narrowly lost the judges' decision.

    Junior Sean May lost a decision to Nevada's Thomas Gennaro at 147 pounds, while Alexander Shin suffered a slight hand injury in his 135-pound bout against the three-time NCBA champion David Schacter (Nevada), which caused head coach Eddie Weichers to call the bout. Junior Boyce Loomis closed out the night with a 185-pound loss to Nevada's Kenny Dyer-Redner.

    The Falcons return to the Academy to begin the 50th Wing Open Tournament. Action begins on Thursday, Feb. 7, with the preliminary round of competition in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym.
