USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Five members of the Air Force boxing team put together a 3-2 record during competition between National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) schools on Saturday, Jan. 26, in Seattle, Wash. Chris Nelson was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week.
Despite dropping a close 165-pound contest to 2012 national quarterfinalist James Descartes of Coast Guard, Nelson claimed his first weekly award of the season. The senior used good combinations and a smart strategy against the hard-punching lefty to tire his opponent late in the fight.
Sean Cork, James Monk and Gytenis Borusas claimed the victories for Air Force, as all three defeated boxers from the University of Washington. Cork defeated Sam Frankel by decision in the 150-pound bout, overcoming several hard lefts with good lateral movement. Monk used good combinations to take a decision from Bernard Do in the 156-pound contest, while Gyntenis Borusas decisioned Shadain Akhavan in the 195-pound bout.
Rounding out the Air Force contingent at the Washington Athletic Club was Will Petersen, who dropped a 139-pound bout to Coast Guard's Bill Dise.
The Falcons return to action on Friday, Feb. 1, for a NCBA competition in Reno, Nev.
