Falcons Close Out Friday Night Fights with 16-Bout Card
Jan. 22, 2011
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force boxing team concluded its season of Friday Night Fights on Jan. 21 with 16 bouts. With the final home tune-up before the start of the Wing Open Tournament, it was the Falcons' largest card of the season and all but three bouts went to the final bell. Casey Habluetzel was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week.
Facing Patrick Ryan in a 170-pound bout, Habluetzel used what the coaches described as "his typical evasive style", combined with good counterpunching, to earn the decision. Ryan came on strong on the in the third round, but Habluetzel was able to hold him off.
Tyrus Korecki took a decision over Joe Silvio at 160 pounds, avenging a loss in last year's Wing Open Championships. Using constant pressure, Korecki was able to solve Silvio's style. The coaches think that this will make this year's Wing Open interesting, as the two are 1-1 against each other this season.
Brett Satterfield had an impressive showing at 202 pounds, as he took a decision from Matt Coates. Satterfield used improved poise and a strong left hand to earn a clear decision and his second win of the semester.
In a rematch of last year's Wing Open finals at 185 pounds, Will Kuechler successfully defended his dual mark against Reggie Howard in a 193-pound contest. Keuchler used quality straight punches and come "slick movement" to take the decision.
Freshman Denis Vorobyov had a strong showing in his loss to two-time All-American Mike McLain in the 183-pound bout. The bout started slow, as McLain had trouble finding Vorobyov in the first round. McLain picked up the pace in the second round, using superior conditioning and strong combination punching to wear down his opponent and earn the victory.
Michael Mizes defeated Will Peterson in a 137-pound bout, while Sam Janasov defeated Chris Nelson at 175 pounds and Rainer Caparas won a decision over Stephen Bittner in a 130-pound bout. Craig Spranger decisioned Adonis Reiler at 150 pounds, while Dan Starr earned a referee stopped victory (second round) over Mike Dunn at 148 pounds, while Dalton Hall picked up a decision over Ryan Curry at 148 pounds.
Marcus Hill earned a decision over Zach Vaughn at 203 pounds, while Hill's squadron-mate Justin Zahn defeated William Jeong at 118 pounds, when the referee stopped the contest in the third round. Derek Demyanek decisioned Vance Hawk at 183 pounds, while Darren Stowe earned the judges' votes in his 167-pound bout with Mike Leland. John Alora closed out the night with a 150-pound win over Scott Wooden, when the referee called the contest I the third round.
Air Force heads out on the road next Saturday (Jan. 29), when it travels to Seattle, Wash., to face opponents from the National Collegiate Boxing Association. The 2011 Wing Open Tournament begins on Feb. 10 and continues each week until the finals on Thursday, March 3, in Clune Arena.
