USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - With the start of the annual Wing Open Tournament just three weeks away and everyone wanting to make a statement, the Air Force boxing team hosted its final Friday Night Fights competition of the season with 13 tough, hard-hitting bouts on Jan. 19, in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym.

Sophomore Boyce Loomis opened the night with his second victory in as many weeks, as he took a unanimous decision from junior Bruce Jamison at 185 pounds. Sophomore David Simon followed that up with a unanimous 134-pound decision over freshman Alex Shin. Senior Evin Negron defeated sophomore Jon Andresen by decision at 178 pounds.

At 171 pounds, junior Mike Tolzien earned a split decision victory over sophomore Justin Lee, while sophomore Lucas Gagliardi claimed his first win of the season on a split scorecard against senior Patrick Wanko at 181 pounds.

A pair of freshmen claimed victories in the next two bouts, as Frederich Diederich decisioned Matt Botteroff at 159 pounds and Matt Lundquist defeated classmate Robert Steigerwald, by unanimous decision, at 161 pounds.

Three of the next four bouts were stopped early by the referees. Junior James Dunn took a 170-pound victory from Hyongdong Kim by first-round stoppage, while junior John Quinn's contest at 200 pounds with Adam Mureillo was stopped in the second round. In addition, junior Daryn Nelson won his 161-pound match with freshman John Doeseckle when the ref stopped the bout midway through the second round.

In the only contest of that four-bout stretch that reached the final bell, sophomore Andrew Catoire took a decision from classmate Elon Brumfield at 180 pounds. Senior Colin LaFavor picked up a unanimous decision over fellow senior Eric Garcia in a 200-pound showdown, while sophomore Jesse Horton closed out the night with a decision over classmate Miguel Valenzuela at 122 pounds.

For his efforts in the second of two 200-pound bouts, LaFavor was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week. The coaching staff based their decision on LaFavor's fast, sharp combinations

Air Force heads out on the road next weekend, as it travels to Seattle, Wash., to take on others boxers from within the National Collegiate Boxing Association. Action is slated to begin at 8 p.m. (PST) on Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Washington Athletic Club.
